The newest innovation in weight loss medication has raised questions among those curious about its accessibility and coverage options. As GLP-1 medications. such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, have been gaining exposure for fast-tracking the weight loss journey for those who are having trouble getting started, in addition to their initial treatment of diabetes patients.
Most of the time, the best coverage you'll get for these medications are if you have type II diabetes. As they are rising in popularity, the question of their Medicaid coverage remains, and how these drugs can be used to fight obesity.
Currently, states decide whether to cover obesity drugs under Medicaid. Currently, I have not seen approval for prescription weight loss under MaineCare or any marketplace plans. However, for Diabetics Ozempic & Mounjaro are on the formulary for every plan on Maine's Marketplace.
